Pilar Estelrich i Arce (Palma, 1952 - Barcelona, 2024). Translator and lecturer.
With a degree in German Philology from the University of Barcelona in 1974 and a PhD, for which she wrote a thesis about Joseph Roth, she is Emeritus Professor in the Faculty of Translation and Interpretation at the Pompeu Fabra University where she has taught general and literary German translation, and description and comparison of translations. As a tenured lecturer in the Department of German Philology at the University of Barcelona, she taught German as a foreign language for many years and, subsequently, German literature. From 1999 to 2004 she was Dean of the Faculty of Translation and Interpretation at the Pompeu Fabra University.
Her work as a translator from German to Catalan is very extensive and important. She has translated works by Ingeborg Bachmann, Walter Benjamin, Bertolt Brecht, Julia Franck, Arno Geiger, Günter Grass, Hermann Hesse, Joachim Israel, Elfriede Jelinek, Franz Kafka, Wolfgang Koeppen, Christoph Ribbat, David Safier, Uwe Tellkamp, Ilija Trojanow and Timur Vermes, among others. Also notable, in the field of children’s literature, are her translations of works by Cornelia Funke, Wolfgang Ecke, and Michael Ende. Commissioned by the Generalitat (Government) of Catalonia Institute for Self-Government Studies, she has translated works by Hugo Preuss, Karl Renner, and Otto Bauer.
She was a member of the Associació d’Escriptors en Llengua Catalana (AELC – Association of Catalan Language Writers).
