Joan Abellan (Barcelona, 1946) is a playwright, essayist, theatre director and a teacher at the Institut del Teatre de la Diputació de Barcelona.
He was awarded on two occasions with the Premi Nacional Ignasi Iglésias de Teatre for the plays Despertar glaçat de primavera (1983) and La ruta del salmó (1985), and with the Premi Salvador Espriu de Teatre for Eclipsi (1986). Together with Jaume Melendres he wrote El collaret d'algues vermelles (1979), with which they obtained the awards Ciutat de Granollers and Crítica Serra d'Or, and the novel La dona sense atributs (1990), which received the Prudenci Bertrana.
Between 1995 and 2003 he was responible for the department of Staging and Dramaturgy at the Institut del Teatre. His activity on theatre is complemented by the essays La representació teatral (1983), Artaud i el teatre (1988), Boal conta Boal (2001) and Els Joglars. Espais (2002), and with regular collaboration in several Catalan, Spanish and international specialized magazines, with theatre reviews, critiques and researches.
He is an honorary member of AELC (Association of Catalan Language Writers).
