Salvador Dalí (Figueres, 1904-Torre Galatea, 1989). Painter and writer of screenplays and books. From his early youth, he had been interested in not only in painting but also by his theoretic explorations. In 1918 in Figueres he held his debut exhibition and a decade later created his first really significant written texts, such as the Manifest Groc (Yellow Manifesto – 1928) and the screenplays for Un chien andalou (The Andulasian Dog – 1928) and L'Âge d'or (The Golden Age – 1931).

His contacts with French Surrealism – and especially with the work of André Breton – led him to publish in French such texts as Le Surréalisme au service de la revolution (Surrealism in the Service of the Revolution – 1930 ) and La conquête de l'irrationnel (1935). Later, during his stay in the United States, he brought forth the novel Hidden Faces (1942) and his autobiography, The Secret Life of Salvador Dalí (same year). He also wrote books on painting, Fifty Secrets of Magic Craftsmanship (1948), and essays such as Le mithe tragique de l´Angelus de Millet (1963).

He wrote his work in various languages –Catalan, English, French– at time making strange multilingual mixtures that had tremendous expressive force. In 1995 the Barcelona publishing house Quaderns Crema released a book, L'alliberament dels dits (The Liberation of the Toes) as part of Dalí's Obra Catalana Completa. In 2004 for the centenary of the artist´s birth, six volumes of his complete works were published by Destino in conjuction with conferences and other commemorations.
