Joan Manel Martí i Llufriu (Ciutadella, 1967), also known as Nel Martí, is a teacher, writer, and politician. With a degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Barcelona, he teaches mathematics at the M. Àngels Cardona i Florit secondary school in Ciutadella (Menorca), as well as publishing books of essays and writing regularly in the press.
Among other activities, he was Secretary-General of the Menorca Socialist Party from 1997 to 1999, and general coordinator of the Menorcan political party Més per Menorca from 2017 to 2019. He was also a member of the Balearic Islands Parliament from 2011 to 2019.
Notable among his works are Maria Àngels Cardona i Florit: la flora i el paisatge de Menorca (IME, 1999), L’art d’educar (El Far, 2002), an essay on the fact of religion, analysed from agnosticism and a layman’s perspective, Les raons del sentit no són les raons de Déu (Documenta Balears, 2009), La nació dels menorquins (Documenta Balear, 2010) and Temps d’educar (Documenta Balears, 2019). In 2021, El somni menorquí(nista) appears, an essay on the background and aspirations of political Menorcanism throughout history, and in 2022, Reinventar-nos per ser un (nou) país (Nova Editorial Moll), on the Congrés de Cultura Catalana in Menorca. Throughout 2023, he publishes Joan Timoner i Petrus. He is a member of the Associació d’Escriptors en Llengua Catalana (AELC – Association of Catalan Language Writers).
