GREEN BEANS

I come from a family where
the men would get up at daybreak
ang go straight to the fields
and my godmother would make breakfast
and feed greens to the rabbits.
And there was time
to listen to the radio
while Aunt Pilar mended
an old pair of pants.
Today I have time to sew a button
on my daughter’s bathrobe,
and I’m reminded of those long, sun-drenched summers
and being in the courtyard with Aunt Pilar
listening to some broadcast
and reading "Azucenas".
Oh, we knew how ti strech out time
without having to cut it short.
We cut the green beans for supper on the stone table top
and the afternoons stretched on and on...

FEIJÀO VERDE

Venho de una família onde
os homens acordavam ao raiar da alba
para amanhar o campo
e a avô fazia a comida
dava herva aos coelhos.
E ainda tinha tempo
para ouvir a rádio
enquanto a tia Pilar cosia
as calças rasgadas.
Hoje teve tempo de pregar um botào
na bata da minha filha,
e fez-me lembrar os longos estios soalheiros
passados no pátio com a tia Pilar,
ouvindo qualquer emissora
lendo “Azucenas”.
Como sabiam esticar o tempo
sem ter de o cortar.
Sobre a mesa de pedra
cortavam o feijào para o jantar
e as tardes prolongavam-se e prolongavam-se.
